Anna Calvi does Wolf Like me by TV on the Radio

I really enjoy artists that cover a song and put a twist on the original. In this clip, Anna Calvi does a great cover of "Wolf Like Me" from TV on the Radio- slows it down, and treats it almost like a dirge!

Pete and the Pirates- Half Moon Street

I love the new album from Pete and the Pirates, lots of great songs. My favorite is probably "Half Moon Street" - here is a great subdued accoustic performance of the song, followed by a short interview.

Tame Impala + Stevie Wonder Mashup :- "Remember Me/Superstition"

Tame Impala is a great psychedelic rock band from Australia- I heard about them listening to the Australian indie/alternarock station Triple J a long time ago- and like them a lot. This epic mash up takes Tame Impala's cover of Blue Boy's "Remember Me" and mashed it up with the classic Stevie Wonder track "Superstition" and kicks the song up to "psychedelic safari" levels! I miss the horns from Superstition though, some times you can't improve too much on perfection I guess!

"Someone Great" By LCD Soundsystem

LCD Soundsystem apparently broke up a couple of weeks ago. My favorite song of theirs is "Someone Great" from 2007's Sound of Silver- but the mix for the single cuts out about two and a half minutes from the album version- dont you hate when that happens? Luckily Youtube comes through with the full version of the song with an cool little fan video.

Songs from "The Odd Couple" by Gnarls Barkley

I think that "The Odd Couple", the second Gnarls Barkley album did not get nearly the same advertising push that the first one recieved, but then again, I don't think that most people really heard more than a couple songs off the first album besides "Crazy." "The Odd Couple" had a lot of great songs as well, and the songs were matched with great videos- here is the video to "I'm going on":

"Who's Gonna Save my Soul" is especially cool- great acting, cool animation, and timely due to the fact that today is the day after Valentine's day- enjoy!

"Get Me" by Dinosaur Jr.

BB6 music's album of the week is "Where you Been" by Dinosaur Jr. I was a big fan of the band back when this album came out- and the song "Get Me" was the high point of the album for me. I just checked out Youtube and there is a video for the song that I had never seen before- ain't Youtube sweet??

Phosphorescent - The Mermaid Parade

I love this song, dreamy and poetic. It reminds me of a great jam by the Dead or Eric Clapton. Just listen, and let it take you away. . .

Avi Buffalo

This song reminds me of the Shins' first two albums, though the lyricist seemed to lose interest by the end of the song. More importantly, any song that mentions bacon is an instant classic!

Wilco over the years.

I have been a fan of Wilco since their first album, and I stretched my fandom back to Jeff Tweedy's days in Uncle Tupelo with Jay Farrar. While I love all of the many branches of the Tupelo Tree, I think Wilco is my favorite bough. Wilco has changed a lot over the years, but I really have come to love the contributions that virtuoso guitarist Nels Cline has brought to the group. Here is Wilco in 2009- "Impossible Germany." The song has a great spot at the end where Nels solos over dueting rhythm guitars.

Two of My Favorites from Dr. Dimento!

Back in high school, I used to love to tune into Dr. Dimento late Sunday nights. I remember a lot of the songs that the good doctor used to play, but here are two of my favorites:

This parody was sung by Tim Cavanaugh- there is a better version on Youtube, but the visuals are all unrelated anime crap.

Christian Scott plays Thom Yorke

Here is a clip of Jazz Trumpeter Christian Scott performing a cover of "The Eraser," from Thom Yorke of Radiohead's 2006 solo album of the same name. I really like Scott's understated style, and I really think that he does a great job with the song.



"The Eraser" is a great album as well, I actually had never heard it until last year. Musically, it sounds like an extension of Radiohead's "Kid A/Amnesiac" period. Here is a video of my favorite song from that album, "Black Swan." I think the best part of the song is the bass line- always lurking in the background...

Quick Draw McGraw mashed with German Expressionism

This is awesome, Merrill Markoe,former writer for David Letterman, took an old Quick Draw McGraw cartoon, and spliced it with parts of Peter Lorre's monologue from "M."



How did she think of this? The parts synch up so beautifully (albeit with a little artistic license in the translation.) "M" is a classic of early cinema,and cinema in general. Fritz Lang is a master of Black and White, Shadow and Reflection, and Peter Lorre is one of the best creepy actors of all time! Here is a clip from "M", along with the parts that Merrill used:

This photo of J. Edgar Hoover from Shorpy caught my eye today- he definitely doesn't look like a man who was one of the most powerful people in the USA for what, 50 years? (Or a guy who dressed in woman's clothes for that matter, but jeeze those are scurrilous and unsubstantiated rumors- so disregard!)

"The Amazing Screw-On Head" Pilot

I am a huge fan of Mike Mignola's comics and his artistic style in general. In particular, I love his use of shadow (I see him as the Caravaggio of comics) and preoccupation with Lovecraftian villians (I love Lovecraftian horror as well.) Here is a pilot for a TV show based on the character made in 2006. It maintains a great deal of Mignola's original artistic style, and throws in some sweet 1860's Steampunk in for good measure. Too bad it wasn't picked up!
